Poland hopeful of Lewandowski fitness boost

Poland are hopeful star striker Robert Lewandowski will be fit for their second Group D match at Euro 2024 against Austria on Thursday.

Lewandowski missed Poland's opening game of the tournament, a 1-0 defeat by the Netherlands, due to a knee injury.

However, the Barcelona forward has now returned to training and is expected to be available for selection against Austria.

Poland coach Czeslaw Michniewicz said: "Robert is very important for us. He is our captain and our leader. We need him on the pitch if we want to win this game."

Austria, meanwhile, will be looking to build on their impressive start to the tournament, which saw them beat North Macedonia 3-1.

Manager Franco Foda said: "We are very happy with our start to the tournament. We played very well against North Macedonia and we created a lot of chances."

"We know that Poland will be a tough opponent, but we are confident that we can get a good result."

The match between Poland and Austria will be played at the Ernst Happel Stadion in Vienna on Thursday, June 21, at 21:00 CEST.
